Workshop Description

Brianne Doura-Schawohl, BA, will provide an overview of the sports wagering landscape in the US, and examine the primary ways that US gambling stakeholders are establishing and infrastructure that replicates the mistakes of more mature markets which are currently experiencing a great deal of problem gambling-related harms.

The presenter will cover a variety of proactive approaches that legislators, regulators, health officials, and private stakeholders could and should be taking to create a safe and sustainable gambling market. The presentation will wind down by highlighting some of the biggest takeaways and lessons learned from legalized sports wagering since the overturning of PASPA and conclude with a call to action for all problem gambling stakeholders.

At the end of this workshop, you will be able to:

• Describe 3 legislative and regulatory happenings around expanded gambling, specifically sports wagering throughout the nation.
• Identify 2 statutory and regulatory barriers and intersections to responsible and problem gambling policy.
• 4 actions that individuals need to be doing to create impactful and meaningful change to gambling policy.

• History of Gambling and Sports Wagering in the U.S.
• Current problem gambling infrastructure across the U.S.
• Certain policies (or lack there-of) around problem gambling and sports wagering that have led to increase rates of harm
• Recommendations of policies to mitigate and reduce the risks of additional harm that sports wagering poses
